Albert M. Higley, Sr., a 1917 civil engineering graduate of the Case School of Applied Science, founds the company. Specializing in industrial, commercial and institutional construction, the firm flourished in its infancy, winning more than 100 contracts in its first four years. Major projects at Hiram College and for The Arco Company, Standard Oil Company, S.S. Kresge Company, and others, were among The Albert M. Higley Co.'s early work.

During the war in the early 1940s, much of the company's work was directed toward building defense industries, including Cleveland Pneumatic Aerol, one of the largest defense plants built in the region. Following the war, the firm built such Cleveland landmarks as The Halle Bros. Co. Service Building and Cleveland's art deco Greyhound Terminal.

Work remained strong and varied in the 60s. The need for downtown parking spawned several parking garage projects, while the firm's work in educational construction also grew, with multiple projects at Denison University, Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, and Kenyon College, among others. And, healthcare construction became a firm forte, with major projects for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
